Modernization

Points, tracks, overhead lines, power supply and much more: in 2026, the Badner Bahn line will undergo extensive renovation work.
Track modernization

Over the coming years, Wiener Lokalbahnen will be focusing on the renewal of its track infrastructure. The aim is to ensure that our passengers can continue to enjoy safe, punctual and reliable travel on the Badner Bahn in the future.

Parts of the railway infrastructure from Vienna’s Schedifkaplatz to Josefsplatz in Baden are several decades old. The strain on the network has increased further in recent years due to service improvements such as more frequent services and the introduction of double-decker trains. The daily strain on the infrastructure is correspondingly high.

Track renewal: focus on summer construction works

The next phase of the modernisation works is scheduled to take place during the summer holidays. From 4 July up to and including 6 September, Wiener Lokalbahnen will be renovating the section of track between Schedifkaplatz and the Inzersdorf Lokalbahn stop. This will involve replacing the tracks, subgrade, points and overhead lines.

Service from Baden Josefsplatz to Inzersdorf Lokalbahn – normal service from 7 September

Due to this track renewal, no train services will be possible on the Vienna section between Inzersdorf Lokalbahn and Wien Oper for the duration of the summer holidays. The Kassa Oper ticket office at the terminus on the Ringstraße will remain closed. During the summer holidays, the Badner Bahn will run from Baden Josefsplatz to Inzersdorf Lokalbahn.

The Badner Bahn will resume full service along the entire route in time for the start of the new school term on 7 September. The Vienna Local Railways are using the holiday period and the absence of school transport to carry out major construction work.

Alternative transport options for passengers in Vienna

Passengers on the Badner Bahn can make use of several alternative transport options during the summer holidays. Wiener Lokalbahnen recommends changing at the Inzersdorf Lokalbahn stop to lines 66A/67B as a feeder service to lines U6 and U1 for onward travel towards the city centre. Tickets for the Badner Bahn are also valid on the alternative routes.

  • Right next to the temporary terminus of the Inzersdorf Lokalbahn, bus routes 66A and 67B heading towards Liesing provide a quick connection to the U6 at Alterlaa station. From there, Meidling station can be reached in a few minutes, or you can continue on to Karlsplatz by changing to the U4 (Längenfeldgasse).
  • Bus routes 66A and 67B also provide a direct connection from the Badner Bahn (Inzersdorf Lokalbahn) towards Favoriten to the U1 (66A – Reumannplatz or 67B – Alaudagasse). The U1 connects to Karlsplatz and the city centre in just a few minutes.

From the city centre, the Badner Bahn towards Shopping City Süd or Baden Josefsplatz is just as easily accessible from the Inzersdorf Lokalbahn stop.

  • The quickest way to the Badner Bahn from Vienna Opera House/Karlsplatz is via the U4 (change at Längenfeldgasse) and U6 to the U6 station Alterlaa. Bus routes 66A or 67B take you to the Badner Bahn in just a few minutes (Purkytgasse / Inzersdorf Lokalbahn stop).
  • Alternatively: from Karlsplatz, take the U1 to Reumannplatz. From there, take the 66A to the Badner Bahn (Purkytgasse / Inzersdorf Lokalbahn stop).
  • If you wish to travel from the city centre to Meidling station, you can use the U4 and U6 lines instead of the Badner Bahn and alight directly at the station.
  • Important note: It is not possible to change to the Badner Bahn at Schedifkaplatz.

In addition, Wiener Lokalbahnen is providing a replacement bus service as a local alternative. This service runs every 15 minutes from the temporary Badner Bahn terminus at Inzersdorf Lokalbahn, serving the area around the closed Gutheil-Schoder-Gasse stop, as well as Schedifkaplatz, Meidling station and the U6.

During night services at weekends and on the eve of public holidays, the Badner Bahn runs from Wiener Neudorf to Inzersdorf Lokalbahn. From here, the N66 night bus provides a direct connection to the night underground (U6 Alterlaa) or a direct connection to Karlsplatz.
